Hair Health Starts in the Shower

Hair Health Starts in the Shower

The idea that your shower water is wreaking havoc on your hair might sound crazy, but it's true. Taking care of your coloured or chemically treated hair is easy, when you have the right tools. But sometimes those tools might not be so obvious. If your hair is unexpectedly dry, brittle or brassy despite your careful hair management with colour-safe shampoo and conditioner, it’s probably your water.

Condo plumbing systems are notoriously hard on your hair. Areas with hard water or well water may have deposits. Some city water treatment facilities may have higher levels of chlorine than others. There are lots of ways your water source can collect ingredients for hair chaos.

Have you ever heard someone complain about ‘brassiness’ or have you yourself noticed brassy tones as your salon colour fades? Mineral deposits from hard water or old plumbing can lead to hair discoloration. When you have coloured hair, (especially blonde) minerals like iron, copper, and calcium can bind to your hair and create unwanted orange and yellow tones. Your hair acts like a sponge, absorbing impurities and metal particles present in your water supply.

Fortunately, we have a quick fix for this. Using a showerhead filter will not only prevent brassiness but will also protect your hair from dryness and unwanted residue. For those with coloured hair, a filter is particularly valuable as it extends the life of your treatments and time between costly salon visits. Not to mention your hair will just feel more amazing!

Here are our two favourites (and both Canadian-owned):
