DEHYDRATED HAIR V.S. DAMAGED HAIR: Everything You Need To Know To Repair Your Hair

Woman with dehydrated hair and woman with damaged hair looking concerned

There’s no worse feeling than DRY BRITTLE HAIR. No matter what climate you live in, when seasons change so do your hair needs. There is no end to the things than can impact how healthy your hair is: Indoor heating, dry winter hair from hot to cold climates, color and chemical hair processing, swimming in natural or chlorine filled water, hormone changes, diet and general aging all impact how your hair looks and feels.

But is your hair damaged or  just dry and dehydrated?

It’s important to know the difference because knowledge is power, and selecting the right hair mask is the key to getting your gorgeous hair back. We can all agree that happy hair is moisturized, feels soft, and shines brightly.

There’s a big difference between DAMAGED hair and DEHYDRATED hair.

The key to keeping your locks looking healthy and feeling hydrated is identifying what hair problems you might be facing and how to target them. Dehydrated hair often has sufficient protein to stay strong, but without sufficient moisture it is brittle and lacks elasticity and shine, leaving it dull, unruly, and prone to tangles and breakage. Damaged hair is protein hungry and in need of repair. DAMAGED hair needs protein to fortify damaged cuticles and deep moisturizers to bring back elasticity and shine, whereas DEHYDRATED hair needs deep conditioning and long-lasting moisturizers to bring back that supple feeling, elasticity and shine. You don’t put on a bandaid when you need stitches - it’s not going to solve the problem. You need the right treatment to reach your hair goals. And we’ve got your back and the key to glorious, sexy, feel good hair.

Put Your Strands to the Test

There’s a very simple and little-known hack to tell you right away whether you’re dealing with damage or dryness. Fresh out of the shower, carefully take a single strand of damp hair from your head and pull lightly from both ends. Watch how your hair reacts to being pulled, and notice how stretchy it is. If your hair…

  1. Stretches about 1/3 and returns to its normal length, you have healthy hair, so keep doing what you're doing!

  2. Doesn't stretch, or only slightly stretches before breaking, your hair is damaged, and needs a protein fix - get yourself a Collagen Mask.

  3. Stretches but doesn't return to its original size, your hair is dry and dehydrated and it’s time for a Mega Moisture Mask

Why is my hair damaged?

Damaged hair can be more than just split ends. The outer layer, or cuticle, can be lifted or cracked when hair is damaged by “aggressors”. These can be a number of factors, like over processing with colour, bleaching, or heat styling. Some aggressors that are pretty impossible to control, like the climate you live in, can also cause damage to hair by wearing on the outermost cuticle of your strands. This can expose the more sensitive inner part of the hair, and result in dullness, fragility, frizziness, and breakage. Damage can be prevented in many ways, like reducing excessive coloring and bleaching (luckily, natural hair colours are all the rage right now), and skipping the flat iron more often. Repairing damage is where protien-rich products will make a world of difference, like our best selling Collagen Hair Mask.

Why is my hair so dry?

The definition of dry hair is pretty straightforward: it's hair that isn’t retaining enough moisture. The scalp produces natural oils that provide healthy hair with shine and protection, and prevent it from drying out and becoming dull. The old advice was don’t wash your hair, but if you choose quality shampoo and conditioning products without sulfates and parabens, you can clean your hair without stripping it of essential moisture. The natural bend in your hair is enough to make it prone to dryness and dehydration - that’s why curly and wavy hair tends to be dryer - when the cuticle layer is lifted, moisture escapes. But as seasons change, your activities change, your styling and hair care routines vary, your hair can suffer dryness and need a moisture boost.  Dryness can happen naturally, and using great products can make it much more manageable, no matter your hair type.

TO112 Mega Moisture Hair Mask

What makes the Mega Moisture Mask perfect for Dry Hair?

Our unique vegan formula maximizes moisture infusion and retention with a blend of the best ingredients for intense hydration to target hair dryness.

Cupuaçu Butter: A natural UV protectant and lightweight moisturizer that easily penetrates the cortex of the hair where it can hold more than 4 times its weight in water for intense, wax-free moisture, and restores elasticity right where the hair needs it most.

Tamanu Oil: A TO112 staple, tamanu oil is long-cherished by French Polynesian women for its nourishing and moisturizing qualities to add shine and improve hair health.

Jojoba Oil: Rich in vitamins and minerals that nourish hair, including vitamin C, B vitamins, vitamin E, copper, and zinc, it is a powerful moisturizer that encourages healthy growth, is easily absorbed to moisturize the inner hair cortex, and restores elasticity.

Aloe Vera: Shares a similar chemical makeup to keratin which is responsible for strength and moisture in the hair. It is rich in essential amino acids, fatty acids, and vitamins A, C, E, and B-12 to nourish, moisturize and fortify hair to promote strength and shine.

Hibiscus Extract: Balances the pH in the hair and scalp as it draws water in to hold a moisture-rich layer to smooth the cuticle for increased flexibility, reduced split ends, infuse strength and brilliant shine.

How to fix dry hair with the Mega Moisture Mask:

Massage into freshly cleansed hair from mid-lengths to ends. Leave in for 2-5 minutes and rinse thoroughly. For best results use once a week after shampooing. For use as an intensive moisture treatment on really thirsty hair, comb through damp hair and secure with a hair wrap. Sleep on it overnight or leave on for several hours before rinsing. Style as desired.

This protein-free, intensive hydrating mask is designed to restore moisture in all dehydrated hair types. From straight, coarse 1C hair to the dehydration-prone, fragile, kinky curl of 4C hair, this formula deeply nourishes with botanical ingredients including Jojoba Oil and Cupuaçu Butter. These ingredients deeply penetrate and moisturize the core of all hair types for soft, strong, flexible hair, restoring elasticity to prevent breakage, and incredible shine throughout.
